Handmade : RAKJ Patterns

I recently had the pleasure of talking to Kristi of RAKJ Patterns, and am excited to bring you the results for this edition of Handmade Friday.  I was drawn to her work because of the simplicity, and attention to detail in each piece.  In this interview you will learn more about Kristi's patterns, inspiration, and life in general.  Learn more about Handmade Friday, and how to get involved at this blog post.

Brooke : Your crochet patterns for children are both beautiful, and unique.  When did you learn your craft, and what have been your biggest inspirations?

Kristi : My family is my inspiration--first and foremost. RAKJ is not a word....it's our family initials. So, if you've tried to say it and it sound like some sort of sneeze--try Ryan, Allison, Kristi, Kimberly, Jason, James and Jacob and you'll get it right!  It keeps our priorities in check ever time we sit down to work. Family First. Always.

I first began crocheting when my daughters were little....they had received a scarf gift box for Christmas and begged me to teach them. I didn't know how to do it---so I taught myself and then taught them. That's where the fun began! I couldn't stop crocheting! We didn't have much money so I could only afford one skein at a time...and I used it all!!!! I would make headbands, hats, swatches and learn new stitches until my hands hurt! I remember selling my first hat online years ago for 3.99 and with free shipping (who cared how much I made...I was so excited that someone wanted what I created!!!)

Brooke : What made you pick patterns for your retail shop as opposed to selling the finished product?

Kristi : I absolutely love to crochet, and I did take orders at one time, but I had so many that I wasn't able to do what I really love....design. I now have a Ready To Ship shop at www.RAKJ.etsy.com . That way I can test my patterns and then have a place to sell and destash what I have on hand.

Brooke : The colors and designs you chose are simply gorgeous.  What are your favorite color combinations?

Kristi : My favorite color combos----how do I choose? I love gray and teal, hot pink- black and white, pink and brown....and of course any color matched with cream!

Brooke : Everything in your shop is so beautiful -- so how much experience with crochet does someone need to pull off one of your patterns?

Kristi : I have patterns for all levels of experience of crocheters! Even for those who don't know how to crochet, I have a 'How to Crochet the Basics' Video! And if you ever need help, you can always email me!

Brooke : What is your favorite pattern for beginners?

Kristi : The Cotton Candy Beanie, Double Pom Pom Hat, Football Cocoon Set, Cream puff Double tassel, Triple Stitch Blanket and the Baby Diaper cover are just a few that are great for beginners! There are plenty to sink your hooks into!

Brooke : If someone were looking to make the perfect baby shower gift from a pattern in your shop, which product would you recommend?

Kristi : The Football Set is a must if your Mommy To Be family are football fans! And for girls.....the Knotty Flower is such a cute hat with a twist!

Brooke : When you are not crocheting, what are your other interests?

Kristi : I am a Mommy of 5 and so I'm busy--by all means of the words...The kids are 15, 14, 12 and twin 4 year olds! So, we stay busy with sports, home school and business! ;) I love to skip out to movies with my husband, but most of all, I am happy playing kick ball in the back yard with our mini-team or piling on the couch for our shows on the DVR.
